Female inmates in the Bartholomew County Jail’s drug rehabilitation program asked county officials for a chance to give back to the community by making masks.

Jail Correction Officer Courtney Fisher obtained fabric and within the past week and a half, the women have provided 120 masks to Sam’s Club and have 70 more just about ready to go.

So far, the women have made masks for Bartholomew County Jail inmates, jail staff, and on Thursday, donated masks to Sam’s Club. That business has been donating hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes to first responders, including those at the jail.

Bartholomew County Sheriff Matt Myers said he wanted to thank Sam’s Club and its employees for the support during the pandemic, after the business donated much-needed cleaning supplies to the sheriff’s department.

“I am very proud of these women for taking this initiative,” Chief Deputy Maj. Chris Lane said of the women’s efforts to make masks.

If anyone has material and/or hard-to-find elastic for the straps they are willing to donate so the women can continue making masks, please contact the sheriff’s department at (812) 379-1650.
